Long, long ago, in a small town in the land of Fusang, there lived a spiritual white cat. It was as snowy white as cotton, with eyes as bright as glass, and a single tuft of orange fur on its head, looking like a tiny bead of blessing.
The white cat was homeless, spending its days at the town's entrance, surviving on the occasional scraps from passersby. Yet, it was never greedy; even when its stomach growled with hunger, it would only take a single bite to sustain itself and gently push the rest to the other stray animals nearby.
In the town, there was an old shopkeeper who ran a small grocery store. He was a kind and generous man. Seeing the white cat's plight, he would place a bowl of warm rice soup at his doorstep every morning. Over time, the white cat began to keep watch under the eaves of the grocery store, becoming the old shopkeeper's "old partner."
At that time, business at the grocery store was slow. The shopkeeper was elderly and had no children; though his life was frugal, he never once ceased his care for the white cat. The cat saw this, kept it in its heart, and secretly vowed to repay the old man's kindness.
One late night, a violent storm struck the town. Wild winds carried a raging flood that threatened to pour into the grocery store, sweeping away the goods the old man had spent his life accumulating and the home he relied on for survival. The white cat paced anxiously. Suddenly, it remembered hearing that there is a spiritual rhythm between heaven and earth—if one sacrificed their own spiritual consciousness, they could pray for fortune and wealth to protect the one they cherished.
Without a moment's hesitation, the cat leaped onto the threshold of the store, raised its right paw high toward the sky, and let out a faint but determined cry.
In an instant, a soft golden light rose from the cat's right paw, piercing through the rain and dark clouds to rest upon the roof of the grocery store...
The golden light formed an invisible barrier, and the floodwaters flowed gently around the shop without causing any damage. More miraculously, after the light faded, a string of shimmering copper coins appeared at the doorstep, as if fallen from the heavens.
When the old shopkeeper woke and saw the store unharmed, the coins at the door, and the weakened white cat still holding its right paw high, he understood everything instantly, and tears streamed down his face.
From then on, the shopkeeper's business gradually picked up. Anyone passing by who saw the white cat raising its right paw couldn't help but step inside to browse and buy a thing or two. The store flourished day by day, and the old man's life became comfortable.
When people asked why business had suddenly improved, the old shopkeeper would point to the white cat under the eaves and say with a smile:
"It is this white cat that, with its spirituality, has beckoned wealth and prosperity for me."
Not long after, a young painter arrived in the town. He was a freelancer, making a living by painting portraits and shop signs. But being new and unknown, he often went days without work, struggling even to keep himself fed.
Upon learning of this, the white cat quietly went to the painter's cottage. This time, it raised its left paw.
Once again, a soft golden light rose, landing upon the painter's desk...
The painter picked up his brush, and inspiration flowed like a spring; his works became remarkably lifelike. Later, a passing wealthy merchant saw the image of the cat raising its left paw and was so captivated by the artwork that he commissioned a portrait on the spot and recommended the artist to all his friends.
Gradually, the painter's fame grew, and he realized his dreams. Grateful for the cat's blessing, he added a small cat raising its left paw to every one of his paintings as a symbol of accompanying good fortune.
The story of the white cat quickly spread throughout the town. People said: raising the right paw attracts wealth and protects the prosperity of businesses; raising the left paw attracts good luck and guards the smooth path of those chasing their dreams. Later, people began making small, lovely figurines out of ceramic and wood, naming them "Maneki-neko" (The Beckoning Cat), placing them at shop entrances and on desks to pray for fortune and luck.
As time passed, the legend of the Maneki-neko crossed borders and entered countless homes. It is not cold or distant like other spiritual beings; it relies only on a pure heart of kindness to silently protect everyone who holds hope and works hard for a better life.
To this day, every Maneki-neko maintains its original form—
Either raising the right paw to guard the prosperity of merchants,
Or raising the left paw to accompany dreamers on their long journeys.
